It’s later than it should be the minutes are slipping away Through the worry and the weight the whiskey and the rain Through this light that I’ve been chasing and the windows I can’t see through anymore I need wild eyed dreaming When I’m stranded at the edge of reason I need lightning in a bottle When I’m drowning in my sorrow I need a heart that I believe in When I’m staring at the sad side of leaving When I’m lost somewhere inside my mind Some place dark you’ll never find Bring me patterns in the sky tonight On my way back to you In the glow of the evening With the world at my back Where the heart of the night resides Through the crazy rain There’s an old wolf moon Holding up the sky It could all come crashing down
2.
Follow the eve and don’t wonder why All the sounds of the world have gone quiet tonight Take my hand, come dance with me ‘neath the harrowed sky ‘neath the streetlights, ‘neath the pain and the strife Leaving shadows on our eyes ‘Neath the harrowed sky There is a truth I can’t find Damn the blackening dawn The meadowlark’s song is quiet Carry the weight and the burden you take All the colors you can see have been blinded tonight Take my word, it’s all a man has ‘neath this harrowed sky ‘Neath the embers, ‘neath ashes and fire Burning everything inside ‘Neath the harrowed sky There is a truth I can’t find Damn the blackening dawn The meadowlark’s song is lost There is no guiding light The shifting winds and calls for home Directionless and drowning in the flames Finding air to breathe, the light to see The wildfire calling you by name ‘Neath the harrowed sky There is no reason or rhyme Damn the blackening night The meadowlark’s song is gone

Wallflower heart, tattered and frayed Never too lonely Never too far away Wallflower heart, are you getting what you need? Saw you near the spotlight Trying to spread your wings Nobody heard you crying Nobody saw you when Your wallflower heart turned into a lion But now it’s gone back again Wallflower heart, no need to sound the alarm I was here all along Sure as night you won’t know when I’m gone Nobody heard me crying Nobody saw me when My wallflower heart turned into a lion But now it’s gone back again Nobody heard you laughing Nobody saw you win Your wallflower heart bloomed into a rose But now it’s a wallflower again now it’s gone back again
4.
What you need some times Isn’t always what you want What you want isn’t always what you need The light is on blinking in the hallway And it’s way passed time to leave I’m a fading ember in a dying flame On a jumpstart morning, I’m the crooked rain The wayward son trying to build something beautiful out of paper and gasoline Where you stand in the light Makes it easy to see But where you stand you’re likely to be Alone in the woods trying to find your way back but you’re lost in your own reflection and you can’t I’m the shifting winds on the stubborn sea On a red sky morning, I’m your lover leaving The false start kid trying to write my masterpiece With paper and gasoline I’m a fading ember in a dying flame On the wings of smoke through your window pane The wayward boy trying to make it last forever in these passing days Just paper and gasoline

about

Full of redemptive heartbreak and leaning further into Creek Drank the Cradle-era Iron and Wine, the EP begins with “Way Back to You,” a quiet meditation on home, the need to roam, and the lure of chaos, made ever more urgent as Fortier stands “on the sad side of leaving.” As always, though, he finds his way back to you.

Vistas open up with the next track on the quietly effective EP, “’Neath the Harrowed Sky,” as the melancholy keyboards, spinning in a line with the exhilaration of fresh air and the open road — but also a vertiginous uncertainty — coalesce around a lightly cinematic dusting of percussion that nevertheless provide the song with the most potent punctuation of all.

What's interesting to Fortier, it seems, is how people reveal and conceal themselves when they are at their most vulnerable. He dives more deeply into this question under midnight blue quilts and covers with the next song on the EP, “Wallflower Heart" — the most Americana-accented music on the release with a bluegrass tone that’s deftly and deceivingly conceived.

Finally, what is “Paper and Gasoline” — the final track on the EP, but also, two touch-and-feel objects that, along with a spark, erupt in flames. Is there a sense, then, in the final song on the short release that Fortier has “found his way back,” or is he still out there searching for the spark to ignite his masterpiece? At the very least, the singer and guitarist sounds more hopeful in the searching.
